The AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) family is a group of Serine/Threonine kinases highly conserved in eukaryotes, from yeast and insects to plants and mammals. Their primary role is the integration of signals regarding nutrient availability and environmental stresses, ensuring the adaptation to those conditions and cell survival (Hardie G., 2007; Ghillebert R. et al., 2011).
