The rapid proliferation of smooth muscle cells (SMCs) contributes to atherosclerotic plaque formation and neointimal thickening in other occlusive vascular diseases. In cancer cells, rapid cell proliferation is often accompanied by DNA damage, division aberrations, elevated cell apoptosis, or accumulation of abnormal cells.
