Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) produced by bacterial fermentation of dietary fiber exert myriad of beneficial effects including the amelioration of inflammation. SCFAs exist as anions at luminal pH; their entry into the cells depends on the expression and function of monocarboxylate transporters.
