An effective vaccine against Staphylococcus aureus infection is a major planetary heath priority, particularly with increasing antibiotic resistance worldwide. Previous efforts for a highly effective S. aureus vaccine were largely unsuccessful, in part, because the vaccine designs have tended to target mainly the B cell immunity and development of opsonic antibodies. In contrast, recent observations suggest that cell mediated immunity may be critical for protection against S. aureus.
