SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2) also known as 2019-nCoV (2019 Novel Coronavirus) is a virus that causes illnesses ranging from the common cold to severe diseases. SARS-CoV-2 Spike Protein is composed of S1 domain and S2 domain. The E484K Spike mutation is of significant concern as it has been identified not only in three of the global variants, but also in the newly described American variants. It has been observed in vitro that this mutation alters the shape of the proteins in the viral spike which can potentially mask the antigenic portion from antibodies. There has been much speculation as whether this mutation may impact the effectiveness of monoclonal antibody treatments and cause reinfection in some patients.
